Heller had a lifelong passion for writing. Catch-22 was influenced by his experiences as a bombardier in World War II;[10] Later on, Heller claimed to have "never had a bad officer." Heller claimed that the "antiwar and antigovernment feelings in the book" were a result of the Korean War and the 1950s rather than World War II itself in a 1977 essay on Catch-22. The Cold War and McCarthyism are the targets of Heller's criticisms rather than World War II.
